Head of Employment Agency sees no reason why refugees in Latvia should not find a job

BC, Riga, 06.10.2015.Print version
The director of the State Employment Agency Inese Kalvane currently sees no reason why refugees in Latvia would be unable to find a job, repots LETA.

Kalvane said in an interview with the LNT show "900 sekundes" that the agency is inexperienced with integrating refugees in the Latvian labor market. For example, last year, the State Employment Agency received only nine refugees who were looking for a job.

The majority of unemployed refugees who register at the State Employment Agency are from former Soviet Union states, however, the agency has also met job-seekers from Afghanistan, said Kalvane.

The agency's director said that with the growing influx of refugees, the agency's performance will require improvements, however, without knowing any specific refugee acceptance plans, delving into details would be premature. Kalvane is certain that the State Employment Agency will be able to successfully deal with the refugee issue and provide these people with jobs.

As reported, EU interior ministers recently allotted Latvia an additional 281 refugees from the original number, thus, the total number that will need safe haven stands at 531. It is currently estimated that Latvia could be paid EUR 6,000 per refugee.
