An agreement is being prepared in order to equip Latvia's current anti-air system "RBS –70" with improved missiles, reports LETA, according to the Defense Ministry's representative Kaspars Galkins.

He explained that according to the procedure, negotiations with the potential cooperation partners and allies are still ongoing. The agreement stipulates implementation of improved anti-air command and weapons systems in Latvia. No further information can be revealed before a deal is signed.

Galkins also declined to reveal the sum of the deal, however, he added that the money will be allocated from the EUR 158 million fund that the government approved last week for the country's surveillance, air control, and anti-air systems.

Improved missiles for "RBS –70" is not the only project the Defense Ministry is currently dealing with. As reported, Defense Minister Raimonds Bergmanis signed a contract last week for three "TPS-77 Multi-Role Radars" (MRR) for use in air surveillance.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Defense has signed an agreement with Latvia for the purchase of "Sentinel" radar systems.
