Share of contraband cigarettes continues to decline in the Estonian market

BC, Tallinn, 22.09.2015.Print version
Contraband cigarettes account for 17.4% of Estonia's tobacco market, market research firm Nielsen's latest so-called empty pack study indicates, LETA/Delfi Ärileht reports.

The number has decreased as compared to the same period last year, when the market share of contraband cigarettes was 20.6%.

The survey was conducted in April this year in different cities in Estonia and it turned out that contraband is consumed most in Northeast Estonia, in Narva (42%), Sillamäe (33%), Kohtla-Järve (32%), Jõhvi (26%) and in South-East Estonia, in Valga (34%). The countrywide consumption has decreased by 1.4 percentage points compared to the first quarter of 2015 and 3.2 percentage points compared to the results of the same period last year.

Russia is still the largest source of cigarettes without tax stamps (50.1%), followed by Belarus (30.6%) and tax-free cigarettes (12.2%).

Nielsen carries out the study twice a year. The latest study was carried out in 14 Estonian towns and 3,000 cigarette packs were collected, which was proportional with the number of population in the towns and the country.
