Estonian Rural Affairs Minister asks for EU emergency assistance to dairy farmers

BC, Tallinn, 02.09.2015.Print version
Estonian Minister of Rural Affairs Urmas Kruuse sent to EU Agriculture Commissioner Phil Hogan a letter, asking to implement emergency relief measures to alleviate the situation of Estonian milk producers, which should help to compensate for farmers for the difference between the market price and the production cost, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

"Dairy farmers are important employers in rural areas, which is why we ask to implement emergency measures to support the sector that is in a very complicated situation due to the Russian trade embargo," wrote Kruuse.

The Minister drew the attention of the Commissioner to the worsening of the Estonian dairy sector's situation since last September – raw milk prices have fallen over the year in Estonia a record 29%, which has led to 4.2% reduction of dairy cattle and 3.8% decline of total milk production. "Restoring production potential is difficult and the resulting situation can cause a negative domino effect for both milk producers and processors," wrote Kruuse.

Kruuse will meet with Hogan on 7 September at the Agriculture and Fisheries Council of Ministers.
