A new case of African swine fever has been established in Rezekne Region's Griskani County in Latvia, where 144 domestic pigs were infected, reports LETA.

The Food and Veterinary Service has carried out the necessary countermeasures on the affected farm, and all pigs have been culled, according to the service's spokeswoman Ilze Meistere.

Thus, African swine fever has been found in 200 domestic pigs in Latvia so far this summer. The infected animals were found in Rezekne, Mazsalaca, Ainazi, Staicele, Ambeli, and Vecsaliena counties. The number of infected wild boars before August 28 reached 636.

The Food and Veterinary Service indicates that a buffer zone has been established within a three kilometer radius around the affected farms, and a control area within a ten kilometer radius. Domestic pigs and wild boars in these territories will be closely monitored. Vehicles moving about the quarantine zones are subject to inspections.

As reported, the first case of African swine fever in the territory of Latvia was registered in June of 2014.
