Fight against swine fever has already required 2.78 mln euros in Estonia

On August 31st, a conference takes place in the Estonian University of Life Sciences in Tartu where officials, scientists, pig farmers and hunters are trying to reach solutions in order to put an end to the spread of the African swine fever in Estonia, the fight against which has cost 2.78 million euros so far, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

University of Life Sciences Rector Mait Klaassen said opening the conference that they are not looking for culprits, but for solutions. He also said that many people are speaking on the swine fever topic who have not been trained to handle the disease while only veterinarians who have been taught to fight diseases, should be listened to now.

Food and Veterinary Board Director General Ago Pärtel said in his speech that as of now, 16 diseased areas have been determined. The initial strategy to not cause wild pigs to move, by reducing hunting, worked till June. Since then however, it hasn’t worked as the disease reached farm pigs and now there is common understanding that without reducing the wild boar population, the disease does not disappear. The destruction of infected domestic pigs has started and Pärtel recognised his colleagues who organise that horrible work days and nights.

The disease damages amount currently to 2.78 million euros. That covers destruction of pigs and fodder as well as disinfection. Also, compensations.
