Russia sends Latvia list of measures to be implemented for resumption of sprat exports

BC, Moscow, 20.08.2015.Print version
Russian consumer rights supervision service "Rospotrebnadzor" has presented to Latvia a list of measures that need to be carried out so export of Latvia-made sprats to Russia could resume, according to the "Rospotrebnadzor" head Anna Popova, cites INTERFAX.

The Latvian Food and Veterinary Service says, however, that it still has not received any official information from "Rospotrebnadzor" regarding the arrest of shipments of five Latvian fish canneries' products on August 1, as the service's senior official Arvids Zirnis told LETA.

As for explanations demanded by another Russian authority – Russian food safety supervising authority "Rosselkhoznadzor" – after Russia banned import of canned fish from Latvia on June 4, all the relevant documents, translated in Russian, were sent to Russia by the date it had set, said Zirnis.

As reported, "Rosselkhoznadzor" said that as of June 4, fish and fish product imports from Latvia and Estonia were banned. Latvia was given time until August 4 to inform Russia about improvements at Latvian fish canneries to reduce benzopyrene levels in their fish products, after which Russia could consider lifting the ban on import of canned fish products from Latvia.

According to the Central Statistical Bureau's data, canned fish exports from Latvia amounted to EUR 82.7 million in 2014, of which 32.1% went to Russia.
