Estonian milk producers demand financial support from Government to survive crisis

Imports restrictions imposed by Russia and the EU abolishing their milk quotas have led the Estonian dairy sector into a crisis that have lasted for an entire year, and swift Government financial support is needed to overcome the crisis, state organisations representing milk producers, writes LETA/National Broadcasting.

In order to request assistance measures, the Estonian Chamber of Agriculture and Commerce, the Confederation of Agriculture, the Confederation of Farmers and the Estonian Dairy Association sent a joint petition to the Government on Monday.

Whereas in August last year, the purchase price of milk was nearly 30 cents per litre, in August this year the price is 21-23 cents pre litre, which is the lowest purchase price of the past ten years, at least.

“The sector is in crisis, and it clearly needs financial assistance,” said CEO of the Estonian Dairy Association Jaanus Murakas. He noted that milk producers have already started cutting back on dairy cow herds, and there are very many farmers who have been forced to cease producing milk due to financial hardships.
