After almost a one-year break, the first case of African swine fever in domestic pigs has been registered in Lithuania, Kaunas Region, according to Ilze Meistere, a representative of the Latvian Food and Veterinary Service, cites LETA.

A year ago, African swine fever was found at one of the largest pig farms in Lithuania, Ignalina Region. This time, a small farmstead, which had three pigs, has been affected.

The Lithuanian authorities are conducting counter-measures in the affected area.

In order to protect domestic pigs from the disease, the Food and Veterinary Service urges people to follow strict biosafety measures.

Lithuanian Agriculture Minister Virginija Baltraitiene says that the Baltics States and Poland will not be able to stop the spread of African swine fever (ASF) without additional help from the European Commission.

The minister also urges pig farmers to be conscious and strictly adhere to biosafety regulations.

Last week, for the first time this year in Lithuania, ASF infection was found in a small pig farm in Jonava district, which falls within the ASF contamination zone as dead wild boars with ASF had been previously found there. According to the agriculture minister, ASF spread to the pig farm due to breaches of biosafety regulations.

As reported, this year's first case of African swine fever was detected in Latvia on June 16 last year, when 18 domestic pigs on a farmstead in Dubna County, Daugavpils Region, were found to have the disease.

African swine fever has been found in 426 wild boars in 28 regions of Latvia so far this year.
