Latvian Radio fined EUR 8,000 over profanities on piece.lv broadcasts

BC, Riga, 31.07.2015.Print version
The National Electronic Mass Media Council on Thursday unanimously supported fining Latvian State Radio over profanities in live broadcasts aired on the radio's Program 5 (LR5) and on Pieci.lv, as the council's spokeswoman Agnese Berga told LETA.

The Latvian Radio has been imposed a fine of EUR 8,000 fine as a result.

The Electronic Mass Media Council concluded after analyzing recordings of LR5 broadcasts "Pilnigs vakars" aired on April 14, 21, 28, May 5, 12, 19, 26, and June 2 and 9, that profane and offensive language was used during these broadcasts.

The Electronic Mass Media Council found that therefore the Latvian Radio violated the Electronic Mass Media law and the Administrative Violations Code.

The Latvian Radio's representatives do not deny that profane language was used in the "Pilnigs vakars" broadcasts, and quality requirements were not fully observed when the broadcasts commenced.

The radio said that it would revise its quality enforcement regulations and content monitoring mechanisms in order to avoid such incidents in the future.

The controversy about the LR5 broadcasts started following several complaints by the SuperFM radio's CEO Ugis Polis, after which Saeima Human Rights and Public Affairs Committee also turned to the Electronic Mass Media Council.
