First baby born in Latvia using preimplantation genetic screening of embryos

The first birth using preimplantation genetic screening of embryos (comparative genomic hybridization using microarrays), which allows screening the embryo's chromosomes before it is implanted in the uterus, has been registered in Latvia.

Liga Baranovska, a representative of the infertility treatment clinic "iVF Riga", informed LETA that the baby was born last week, July 23. The clinic's specialists used this method to help one of the patients conceive a child last year.

The clinic emphasizes that using this method, one of the healthy embryos was successfully transferred to the uterus, and nine months later, the patient gave birth to a healthy baby.

According to Baranovska, one of the most popular causes for infertility is genetic flaws in the embryo. Various chromosomal abnormalities, such as insufficient or excessive number of chromosomes, cause the body to naturally reject the embryo. As a result, pregnancy cannot occur or is discontinued due to miscarriage, the clinic's representative said.

Preimplantation genetic screening of embryos allows assessing the chromosomal condition, detecting abnormalities, and choosing a viable embryo for implantation in the uterus.
