Russia bans import of several Latvian fish canneries' products

As of August 1, several Latvian fish canneries are banned from exporting their produce to Russia. The ban applies to the following Latvian companies – Ventspils zivju konservu kombinats, GAMMA-A, Sabiedriba IMS, UNDA, and Saldus galas kombinats, according to an announcement by the Russian Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing ("Rospotrebnadzor"), cites LETA/TASS.

The service said it had "detected violations of consumer rights" in the said companies' products.


During the inspection, the service established inadequacies with regard to product branding, mass properties, energy value, and organoleptic indicators.

 

"Food products that do not comply with the requirements must be removed from circulation," the service said.

 

The message also notes that "the study of fish canned products of other manufacturers are continuing."

As previously announced to Interfax by the head of Rospotrebnadzor, chief state sanitary doctor of Russia Anna Popova, because of violations it was decided to suspend the import of canned fish that are produced at four plants in Latvia.

"On August 1, the import of canned fish will be suspended. Now we are talking about four Latvian companies", said Popova. – We continuestudying the fish canned products from other manufacturers."
