Latvia to request additional aid from EU for the dairy sector

BC, Riga, 28.07.2015.Print version
As a result of the complicated situation in Latvia's dairy industry, some dairy producers may go bankrupt, although another meeting with EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Phil Hogan has been scheduled for August in order to discuss the complicated situation and seek additional financial aid for the dairy industry, Agriculture Minister Janis Duklavs (Greens/Farmers) said in an interview with Latvian Radio this morning, cites LETA.

The minister said he did not mean that farmers would begin to close down their farms and cull their livestock en masse. However, the crisis will have consequences, and some farmers might have to liquidate their herds.

"Many people claim that we should be looking for new export markets, but it is not easy with regard to dairy products. For this reason, we must find solutions in situations when there is almost no way out," the minister said.

He also announced his plan to meet with Hogan in August in order to discuss the current situation in the dairy industry, as the European Commission indicated last year that, in case the situation does not improve, the Commission would be prepared to return to financial aid talks.

As reported, in August 2014 Russia banned import of most food products from the EU, United States and other Western countries that had adopted sanctions against Moscow. Russia's embargo concerns beef, pork, fruit, vegetables, poultry, fish, cheese, milk, and dairy products.
