Estonian PM: stronger local governments make rural areas more competitive
"A
great start has been made with local government reform in Saaremaa, and the
Lääne-Saare municipality sets a good example," Prime Minister said.
"When local people together decide what is important for them, and agree
on the services and other important points, the merging process of
municipalities is a lot easier. This is exactly what has happened in the
Lääne-Saare municipality," Rõivas remarked.
"A merged local government means the better capability to carry out
investments, which means a direct increase of welfare for people," the
Prime Minister said. "Rational arguments speak in favour of moving towards
a unified local government of Saaremaa," Rõivas said and added that strong
local governments significantly enhance the competitiveness of rural areas.
While on Saaremaa, Prime Minister also paid a visit to the Saare Delifood OÜ company. The Prime Minister said that this is a
progressive-minded company producing high quality foodstuffs from local
materials.
Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas also had meetings with Mayor of Kuressaare Madis Kallas and the Rotary Club of
Saaremaa.
