Latvian MFA discussed opportunities for entering new markets with fish processing enterprises

On 22 July 2015, Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics met with representatives the fish processing industry to discuss the current situation in this sector and opportunities for entering new markets, reports BC the Latvian MFA.

The Latvian Foreign Service has been working conscientiously together with the Ministry of Agriculture to expand the opportunities for Latvian businesses to enter new markets, said Edgars Rinkevics, and he added that, in this regard, network of Latvian embassies abroad is at the disposal of Latvia’s businesses.

 

Minister Rinkevics noted that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is making every effort to resolve the issue of the transit of Latvia’s fish products through Russia and stressed the role of businesses in examining these questions more quickly.

 

The Minister also directed attention to the progress with the certification of Latvia’s dairy and fishery products in the Chinese market, which is the result of several years of work. The Minister also emphasised successful cooperation with associations and public institutions concerned with this sector in obtaining a positive reply from food and veterinary services of other countries in relation to Latvian food exports in the shortest time possible. During the conversation, Foreign Minister Rinkevics added that the competent Latvian authorities are currently engaging with the relevant institutions in Brazil and South Korea concerning the certification of fish products from Latvia.

 

Taking part in the discussion were Didzis Smits, President of the “Union of Latvian Fish Processing Industries”; Andris Bite, representing the companies SIA Karavela and AS Ventspils zivju konservu kombināts; Maris Trankalis of AS Brivais vilnis; and Igors Puzs from SIA Gamma-a.
