Latvian Television's Channel 3 could achieve at least half of the "First Baltic Channel's" current audience in three years, and that alone would be a huge accomplishment as these viewers could receive information from an alternative source, the head of the National Electronic Mass Media Council (NEMMC) Ainars Dimants says in an interview with Latvijas Avize, cites LETA.

"This is when Russia, according to expert analyses by the way, will be militarily ready to attack the Baltic States," stresses Dimants.

"Western partners have repeatedly pointed out – stop talking about Russian propaganda, start doing something, and we will support you financially in this matter. Our partners are saying – excuse us, you want us to provide military support in case of a conflict, but what will happen to people who are left in Russia's informative space? They will shoot you in the back, right?" Dimants told Latvijas Avize.

He says that it is important to neutralize the Russian propaganda by offering alternative information. "Indeed, our task is to neutralize Russia's propaganda, and this can be achieved by offering alternative information. This is not only about creating a new public television channel with a multimedia online platform in collaboration with Latvian Radio 4, the aim of which is to reach Russian and other minority audiences, but also about supporting private Russian-speaking radio stations in Latgale province, enforcing regulations, and so on," said Dimants.

As reported, the National Electronic Mass Media Council decided on March 19 to approve the establishment of a third Latvian Television channel. Content will be presented in the Russian language and it will be broadcast in all of Latvia.
