Excise tax on crop protection products may have negative impact on entire agricultural sector in Latvia

BC, Riga, 06.07.2015.Print version
The Health Ministry's suggestion to apply excise tax to crop protection products may have a negative impact on the entire agricultural sector as well as prompt distribution of illegal products on the market, therefore the Agriculture Ministry will oppose the initiative, as the Agriculture Ministry's senior official Iveta Ozolina told LETA.

At the moment, excise tax does not apply to crop protection products.

The Health Ministry's plan could reduce the availability of such products to farmers and foresters in Latvia. "Furthermore, there is a high risk that the amount of products brought to Latvia illegally will increase. That means that the impact on the environment, or the threat of pollution, will increase," said Ozolina. In addition, use of illegal crop protection products is very hard to detect as such control measures are very costly, she added.

"Any additional taxes need their impact on the given sector to be assessed. The Agriculture Ministry would like to see the rationale behind the initiative, and an assessment of its impact," said Ozolina.

As reported, the Health Ministry has suggested imposing excise tax on several food product groups and crop protection products, claiming that this would increase budget revenue by almost EUR 30 million.
