A war between Lithuanian dairy producers and processors is brewing

A war is brewing between Lithuanian dairy producers and processors. On July 1st 2015, two tanks of milk were poured out on the ground in a farm near Dotnuva, after processors unilaterally reduced the amount of milk to be purchased from cooperatives and farmers simply could not sell it, reports LETA/ELTA, referring to Vakaro zinios.

Agriculture Minister Virginija Baltraitiene who attended the protest campaign said it was a sad site to see milk being wasted. She promised to refer to the Competition Council and the State Tax Inspectorate in order for the conflict between dairy producers and processors to be sorted at last.

"We have come to extreme measures - we poured out our milk on the ground in a farm. But we might bring it to the Government or the presidential palace tomorrow. Perhaps they will accept our milk. Global issues on armament and other complicated issues are solved, while a simple question on milk cannot be," said Chairman of the Chamber of Agriculture of Lithuania, Andriejus Stancikas.

He had no doubt that dairy processors are trying to ruin cooperatives. According to him, processors fear that cooperative Pienas LT will launch its own processing facility in late 2015 that will have the capacity to process 1,000 tonnes of milk.
