Eesti Telekom: disappearance of roaming fees in EU can lead to price increase

BC, Tallinn, 30.06.2015.Print version
Eesti Telekom's Director of Communications Kaja Sepp said that the abolition of roaming charges in the European Union could lead to price increases in Estonia, LETA/Estonian Public Broadcasting (ERR) reports.

"On the whole, it is definitely an idea supporting the common European economic space, of which cross-border businesses and individuals benefit most. At the same time, however, for Estonian customers it could bring, besides the fall of prices in a foreign country, rising prices in the domestic market, since the Estonian data communication charges are among the lowest in Europe," Sepp told ERR news portal.

"At the moment there are a lot of practical issues to be resolved, which is why the final impact of the decision cannot be pointed out yet," she added.

Tele2 Eesti Managing Director of Argo Virkebau said that abolition of roaming charges is on bigger scale a matter of time and clearly benefits the consumer. Past price reductions have shown that at the same time, usage will increase and telecom companies thus do not lose a lot of income.

Virkebau noted that, according to the statistics of Tele2, Estonians used in the first quarter of this year 140 MB of mobile Internet during a trip in Europe, which is 400% more than at the same time last year, and one of the highest figures in Europe.

The European Union reached a tentative agreement today to eliminate by June 2017 the international roaming charges of mobile communications.
