Six rescuers suffered injuries in the extinguishing work of a major fire that broke out Tuesday afternoon (June 9th) in the Molycorp Silmet AS chemicals industry in Sillamäe, North East Estonia, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

Rescue Board said that six rescuers needed medical care during the extinguishing work, two of whom were allowed home after receiving medical care, and four continued their work.

Estonian Rescue Centre received a call at 3.45 p.m. on Tuesday that some plastic is burning in a five-storey industrial building in Sillamäe and that 135 tons of chemical agents are stored in that building.

In the fire, a part of the roof of the building and two upper floors collapsed and some tanks containing chemicals were broken. Local people were instructed to stay indoors and keep windows closed, in fear of toxic smoke.

The fire was liquidated by 4.30 a.m. this morning.

Rescue Board deputy director general Alo Tammsalu said Wednesday morning that the fire is extinguished and there is no danger to anyone any longer. He said that while around 30 local people called the poisoning information centre, most of them asked for information and there are no reports about any locals getting health problems because of the fire.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
