Latvian pharmaceutical companies strongly oppose decriminalization of marijuana

BC, Riga, 02.06.2015.Print version
Latvian pharmaceutical companies have expressed strong objections against any attempts to legalize or facilitate free turnover of narcotics in the country, furthermore, the youth's interest in soft drugs will only grow because of promotion of such public initiatives, this according to Alla Cudovska, a spokeswoman for the Pharmacists' Society of Latvia, cites LETA.

Pharmacists emphasize that the initiative's authors are deliberately misinforming the society about free access to marijuana in Estonia and other European Union member states, as well as its well-known medicinal qualities.

Pharmacists remind that use of narcotics for medicinal reasons is strongly regulated in Latvia. By law, narcotic substances are subject to strict record keeping requirements and must be stored in a safe. These drugs are not available without a prescription, and their turnover is officially reported by pharmacies on a monthly basis.

As reported, petition for marijuana decriminalization was submitted to Saeima on Monday. More than 10,300 people have signed the petition, according to information on www.manabalss.lv.

The initiative for marijuana decriminalization was launched on www.manabalss.lv on January 23, 2012.
