Drug smugglers caught in Latvia every other day

BC, Riga, 06.05.2015.Print version
Drug smugglers are caught in Latvia every other day, Talis Kravalis, Director of the State Revenue Service's Customs Board, said in an interview with the Latvian Television show "Rita panorama", informs LETA.

This does not mean though that Latvia could become a major drug transit hub. The scale of illegal drug trade in other countries is much bigger.

Drugs are usually found in postal packages or at border crossings.

Most cases do not involve Latvia as a destination for drug shipments, as it serves only as a transit country. Part of the drugs stays in Latvia, usually as a payment for smuggling services.

As reported, last month the State Revenue Service seized one of the largest hauls of illegal narcotics in Latvia's history – 1,115 kilograms of hashish with a street value of EUR 8 million to EUR 12 million.
