In the past two weeks, regular inspections at catering companies and cafeterias serving school lunches, conducted by agents from the Food and Veterinary Service, have established that 96 of 166 companies failed to comply with health and nutrition regulations, the Service's representative Anna Joffe informed LETA.

The majority of violations were related to the meal's insufficient energy value, and insufficient amounts of the weekly norm. The menus mainly lacked fresh fruit, vegetables, and foods rich in protein – cheese, cottage cheese, potatoes.

The inspections also revealed that in some cases, the lunch did not have a main dish or it lacked variety.

The companies often failed to specify all the required information about the foods on the menu, changes were not coordinated with the school's head office.

During the inspections, 23 companies provided food, which does not comply with the applied requirements or is prohibited, for example, dumplings and sausage containing insufficient amount of meat, or lacking information about the amount of salt in the product.

Meanwhile, 87 companies failed to comply with hygiene requirements and used expired or spoiled products.
