Businessman: India would be "another China" for Latvian food producers

BC, Riga, 21.04.2015.Print version
Martins Spravniks, the chairman of the India-Baltic Business Council, sees a lucrative market for Latvian food producers in India due to its huge population (1.2 billion) and an expanding middle class there (with more than satisfactory income), informs LETA.

Spravniks pointed out that by the year 2025, the middle class in India will have swelled to 600,000 in number - from the current 250,000.

"India is another China for us, with good prospects for success. The market continues to grow, particularly the dairy segment, with prices - very high. [..] At this time, competition from other European companies is minimal, therefore those forging ahead without delay in contracting partners, have a good chance. India is a country where eating habits and traditional diet are changing, and demand is increasing across the board, especially for chocolate, spaghetti, juice. The quicker one gets their foot in the door, the better," Spravniks declared.

He mentioned the dairy Jaunpils pienotava and Pure Chocolate as two enterprises currently in negotiation with India about exporting products, but "the potential is there for many other companies."
