Auction of historic Agenskalns water tower in Riga cancelled after public pressure
The auction was canceled following inquiries from culture representatives about the water tower's architectural and historical significance, as well as its accessibility to the public, Rigas udens spokesman Arturs Mucenieks informed LETA.
After information about the auction became public, people began long discussions on social networks and forums about the preservation of the historic building.
Mucenieks confirmed that there was major interest in the tower from the potential buyers. Before registered for the auction, the tower was visited by about 50 individuals and legal entities.
Following the Riga City Council's Deputy Chairman Andris Ameriks' (Honor to Serve Riga) initiative, a task force will be set up to develop a concept on how to utilize the water tower.
The task force will be headed by the CEO of Rigas udens.
The concept is to be finalized by September 1.
