Estonian milk producers won’t get 2.8 mln euros of emergency assistance

BC, Tallinn, 16.04.2015.Print version
Estonian Finance Minister Sven Sester rejected the request of the previous Minister of Agriculture Ivar Padar to allocate from the government reserves 2.8 million euros to grant milk producers emergency assistance, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

The Ministry of Agriculture requested emergency assistance in connection with the import restrictions enforced by Russia in August last year, which resulted in an unfavourable market situation for milk and milk products and the need for additional national measures to help prevent milk producers' bankruptcy wave.

The Minister of Finance said in its reply to the Ministry of Agriculture, that the draft bill materials do not show exactly how and whom the support would be paid so that it would achieve its objective, i.e. raise the competitiveness of the dairy sector and bring it out of the crisis.

Sester said also that in addition to EU extraordinary crisis aid, the first financial period 2014-2020 measures will open up for Estonia.
