Rebroadcasting of RTR Planeta programme suspended for 3 months in Lithuania

BC, Vilnius, 09.04.2015.Print version
On April 8th 2015, the Lithuanian Radio and Television Commission (LRTK) suspended the rebroadcasting of the TV programme RTR Planeta for three months, informs LETA/ELTA.

As the LRTK reports, RTR Planeta, which is registered in Sweden but produced and broadcast by the Russian company VGTRK, will not be shown in Lithuania for the next three months as of 13 April.

The decision has been made after dissemination of biased and divisive information by the show Sunday Evening with Vladimir Solovyov, broadcast by RTR Planeta on 18 January. Information with similar content was disseminated for the second time in less than a year, therefore, the LRTK decided to apply the programme's producer, Sweden's regulatory body, which issued the TV's licence and the European Commission, informing them about the detected violations.

However, consultations with the broadcasting state and the European Commission did not produce a mutual agreement within 15 days after the warning, while violations continued.

As reported, in April 2014, the LRTK stated that the TV show Vesti Nedeli of the RTR Planeta re-broadcast on 2 March, 2014 spread information justifying the violence against peaceful citizens in Ukraine, provoked discord between the Russians and Ukrainians and the hatred for the new Ukraine's Government, the US and its allies and excused the military intervention in a sovereign country and annexation of part of the country.

The Radio and Television Commission of Lithuania is an independent institution with powers of regulation and supervision of activities of radio and television broadcasters, which is accountable to the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania.
