Health Ministry plans to "shift" construction deadlines for Riga Stradins Hospital

BC, Riga, 25.02.2015.Print version
Latvia will not lose funding from the European Union because of a halt in the construction of the new wing at Pauls Stradins Clinical University Hospital, Health Minister Guntis Belevics (Greens/Farmers) said in an interview with the LNT show "900 sekundes" this morning, informs LETA.

The minister mentioned of a motion to contact EU fund representatives for an approval to shift deadlines. "The situation is very hopeful that Latvia will not lose funding from the European Union. This is a matter of coordination," the minister said.

He also commented on the situation at another major Riga hospital, i.e. if the board at Riga East Clinical University Hospital ("Gailezers") had attempted to get approval earlier to shift deadlines, it probably would not have "lost" EUR 600,000 of the EU funding.

"Time is something we could agree on, we are focused on this," Belevics said.

The minister added that the high costs due to a halt in the construction of the hospital's new wing will be a problem for construction companies. "These costs will not be covered by the state in any case. We are bound by agreements," the minister stressed.

Belevics also mentioned that there should be a Construction Ministry in Latvia.
