Riga East Clinical University Hospital loses EUR 23.7 mln in 4 years

BC, Riga, 25.02.2015.Print version
Riga East Clinical University Hospital suffered a loss of EUR 23.7 million from 2011 until the start of 2015, as the hospital's new board chairwoman, Anita Slokenberga, told a press conference yesterday, cites LETA.

The loss did not happen all of a sudden, the entire situation dates back to 2011 when the hospital's healthcare fees were reduced 26% to make them equal with the fees of regional hospitals, and the hospital went through several reorganizations. The hospital tried to rectify the situation for several years at the expense of internal reserves, optimization measures and various provisions.

In Slokenberga's opinion, the Health Ministry, as the entity that is the legal owner of the hospital, needs to work to improve the current system of fees for healthcare services.

Slokenberga went on to say that the hospital's management, as a result of cost optimization, has been able to save EUR 5 million, and the hospital is considering other options to save more money.

Compared to 2014, this year the hospital will receive EUR 5 million more from the National Health Service as compensation for state-covered services. Nevertheless, this increase will not result in the intended result and the hospital will most probably end this year with losses again, said Slokenberga.

At the end of the press conference, Slokenbega emphasized that the hospital would continue to provide its services to patients in full amount and that the hospital was not insolvent.

As reported, there are multiple indications that the Riga Eastern Clinical University Hospital is on the brink of insolvency, Health Minister Guntis Belevics (Greens/Farmers) said in an interview with the LNT show "900 sekundes" this morning.
