Health Minister Guntis Belevics (Greens/Farmers) informed the press today about the pitiful situation at Riga East Clinical University Hospital (AKA "Gailezers"), whose capital is negative, totaling about minus EUR 8.5 million, informs LETA.

The situation at the hospital keeps deteriorating year after year, and its current capital is negative. In addition to EUR 8.5 million, there are another 4 million of irrecoverable debts from patients, who have not paid for healthcare services at the hospital.

"The situation is ugly at the moment, and solutions must be found as soon as possible," the minister stressed. No funding will be requested from the government, unlike several years back when Pauls Stradins Clinical University Hospital was in a similar situation. There will be several options for the solution, which will be presented to the government, Belevics informed.

The minister stressed that the hospital is not under threat of being shut down, because "a solution will be found."

There are multiple indications that Riga East Clinical University Hospital is on the brink of insolvency, Belevics said in an interview with the LNT show "900 sekundes" this morning.

The minister said that now he must do everything in his power to prevent the hospital from being closed. A plan of action will be drawn up. "This is one of our biggest challenges. We have not yet seen the hospital's balance sheet, profit and loss account, but the hospital has negative equity," Belevics emphasized.
