Lithuania's law enforcement launches investigation into pharmaceutics company, 11 people detained

BC, Vilnius, 24.02.2015.Print version
After a long criminal intelligence probe, officers of the Special Investigation Service (STT) identified a corruption scheme, which involved representatives of a pharmaceutics company and doctors from various medical establishments in Lithuania, reports LETA/ELTA.

The STT launched a wide-scale investigation over possible large-scale graft, bribery and false accounting.

On Tuesday, 24 February, the STT detained 11 employees of the pharmaceutics company in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipeda, Siauliai and Panevezys. Searches were carried out in the company's premises, as well as homes, workplaces and vehicles of the detained people.

It is suspected that the representatives of the pharmaceutics company had agreed with doctors from over 30 Lithuanian cities and districts to recommend patients expensive products provided by the company and not to mention competitors' products in return for illegal remuneration.

According to the data available to the STT, the company might have allotted more than EUR 145,000 to bribe doctors in 2014 alone. Based on preliminary information, over 100 Lithuanian doctors were part of the criminal systemic corruption activities.

The Prosecutor General's Office established a special investigation group consisting of regional Prosecutor Offices and STT divisions.
