Lithuanian PM supports law for dairy sector

BC, Vilnius, 19.02.2015.Print version
Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius supports the idea of a temporary law that would regulate relations between milk producers, processors and retailers, reports LETA/ELTA.

According to Butkevicius, the draft law focuses more on regulating relations between milk producers, processors and retailers, but not on establishing or regulating prices levels.

The prime minister said that milk processors have abused the situation even when producers received additional funds to cover for losses. The funds were projected in the national budget and granted by the EU. At that time milk purchase prices were reduced even further. Thus, according to Butkevicius, certain dishonesty was noticeable.

Minister of Agriculture Virginija Baltraitiene said on Wednesday that the draft law regulating the dairy sector will be submitted to the Seimas soon. She said that the law will not regulate concrete milk purchase prices, but will provide for a fair price to farmers regardless of the amount of milk produced. The minister expects the law to pass in March.
