First applications for the Rural Development Programme for Lithuania 2014-2020 are going to be accepted in April 2015. Young farmers will be the first ones to apply for the European support, informs LETA/ELTA.

A total of EUR 1.98 billion will be distributed based on the latest Rural Development Programme adopted by the European Commission last Friday. The European Union funds will constitute EUR 1.61 billion of the amount.

The latest Rural Development Programme is by 14% smaller than the previous one, which amounted to EUR 2.2 billion. As a result funding was reduced to all instruments, only the support for the modernisation of farms has not changed.

Funding will be distributed for 16 instruments of the Rural Development Programme. At a press conference on Tuesday Minister of Agriculture Virginija Baltraitiene said that funds will be directed at promoting rural and agricultural economy, and creating jobs. It is aimed that the investment in rural development would create the highest possible added value. In the new funding period greater attention will be devoted to environmental protection. Furthermore, over 130,000 people should be trained, including farmers, owners of land and forest, representatives of the food industry as well as small and medium-sized businesses in rural areas. It will be sought to improve their professional skills and promote diversification of activities.

"The first applications will be submitted this spring. The first calls for proposals will be for young farmers. Rules will be prepared in early March and we will start collecting applications in early April," said Baltraitiene.
