No genetically modified crops or crop products found in Lithuania in 2014

The State Plant Service under the Ministry of Agriculture in Lithuania, which is responsible for monitoring crops and crop products, carried out 102,096 inspections in 2014 and determined 1,184 violations. Nevertheless, genetically modified crops or crop products were not found to be grown or brought to Lithuania, reports LETA/ELTA.

Specialists of the State Plant Service said that 103 violations were rather serious, leading to warnings or fines.

 

Violations were determined while carrying out phytosanitary control of crops, crop products or related objects; marketing standards applicable to fresh fruit and vegetable; control of storage, use and placing on the market of crop protection products; quality control of crop, propagating material and fertilisers.

 

Most phytosanitary inspections were carried out on crops, crop products and related objects entering or leaving Lithuania or transported in transit, as well as crops and crop products grown, imported, processed or supplied to the market in Lithuania. The inspections aimed to ascertain that harmful organisms, brought with crops and crop products as well as other objects, are not imported and spread in Lithuania.
