Estonian parliament passes act on organ transplantation

BC, Tallinn, 30.01.2015.Print version
With 76 votes in favour, the Estonain Riigikogu passed the Procurement, Handling and Transplantation of Cells, Tissues and Organs Act, initiated by the Government of the Republic, which establishes the conditions and procedures for the procurement, handling and transplantation of human tissues, cells and organs, and the order and liability of state supervision, the parliament’s press service reports LETA.

The Act will be applied to bringing extracorporeally processed or unprocessed cells, tissues and organs that have been removed from living or deceased human donors into direct contact with human body by local or systemic transplantation. At the same time, national preconditions for accession to international organ exchange organisations are created.

Until now the procurement, handling and transplantation of cells, tissues and organs has been regulated in Estonia by the Handling and Transplantation of Cells, Tissues and Organs Act, the Artificial Insemination and Embryo Protection Act, the Blood Act and, in part, the Medicinal Products Act.

The Act is necessitated by the requirement of harmonisation with European Union legislation and the need to ensure the safety of the procurement, handling and transplantation of human tissues, cells and organs.
