Lithuanian milk processors switch to powdered milk

Milk processors have adjusted the range of their products after Russia closed its market for Lithuanian produce. Processors have increased manufacture of products with longer shelf-life, reports LETA/ELTA, referring to Vakaro zinios.

However, farmers are forced to sell raw milk very cheaply. It is used to produce both inexpensive skimmed milk powder and costly cheeses. In spite of the embargo by Russia, dairy product export in 2014 compared with 2013 increased by almost 6 times.

Less fresh products were manufactured, instead, they were replaced by butter and skimmed milk powder. Production of skimmed milk powder grew by 71.3% in the last ten months of 2014 and reached 29.43 thousand tonnes. Moreover, Lithuanian producers manage to gradually find new and exotic markets – Saudi Arabia, Korea, Thailand, Philippines.

In November, skimmed milk powder began to be exported to Bangladesh, Japan, Pakistan and Yemen. The state also somewhat helped to mitigate the effects of the Russian embargo, EUR 145,000 was allocated to support private storage.
