Latvian AgriMin: no additional EU Commission funds for dairy producers

BC, Riga, 26.01.2015.Print version
The European Commission is not planning on allocating any additional funds for the dairy industry due to the losses caused by the Russian embargo, as there are different interpretations of what a crisis is, Agriculture Minister Janis Duklavs said during the monthly Latvian Agricultural Organization Cooperation Council meeting on January 23rd, reports LETA.

"I had a discussion with Commissioner Phil Hogan in Brussels yesterday. He said that different countries have differing interpretations of what a crisis is. The majority of countries believe that there are market fluctuations at the moment, not a crisis. If there is a real crisis, we could return to the issue of support, but not for now," Duklavs said.

At the same time Duklavs said that, if necessary, he, as a member of the presiding country of Council of the European Union, will repeatedly propose discussions on additional support for dairy producers.

Duklavs also said that the European Union's aid of EUR 7.7 million, approved last year, will be paid in full by April this year.

He also reminded that starting January 1, dairy producers have opportunity to receive state support for dairy cows in the amount of EUR 21,500,325.

The state also offers subsidies in the total amount of EUR 1.85 million for productivity control.
