During the meeting, Berzins emphasized that Latvia has a high opinion of its current partnership with Qatar, adding that he hoped the countries will be able to develop closer ties, especially in transport sector.

"There is no economic cooperation in export or import taking place between Latvia and Qatar at the moment, nevertheless, Latvia is very interested in establishing such cooperation, as both sides have previously expressed a wish to facilitate both countries' potential, bilaterally-beneficial cooperation," the president said, adding that while Latvia and Qatar have similar populations, these are very different countries, which gives hope for an excellent cooperation model in the near future.

"Finding new export markets is currently one of Latvia's priorities, thus we believe that Qatar could become an important export market for Latvian farmers and food producers," the president said.

The Qatari foreign minister congratulated Latvia on its Presidency of the Council of the European Union, at the same time urging it to facilitate political relations between the European Union and the Arab states of the Persian Gulf.

Attiyah also informed the president about the most significant developments in the region, drawing attention toward countries where political stability is causing concerns and threatens the Arab states of the Persian Gulf.
