Estonian Foreign Trade and Entrepreneurship Minister Anne Sulling, together with chairman of the board of dairy producer E-Piim and Estonian Dairy Union Jaanus Murakas met on Tuesday with the food sector leaders of the Japanese Marubeni Corporation, hoping to reach an agreement on Estonian dairy exports, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

"The objective of the negotiations has been to find a new permanent export market for Estonian dairy products and Japan has been our target," said Sulling, adding that Estonia has good connections from the past with the Marubeni Corporation and that has greatly accelerated the negotiations process.

"We started negotiations with the Marubeni concern in September, their representatives have visited Estonian dairy industries, have been satisfied with the quality of our products and by now we have reached very close to real results," commented Sulling.

E-Piim board chairman Jaanus Murakas meets this week in Tokyo and Osaka with end-buyers who are interested in buying Estonian cheese and demineralised whey powder. "Estonian dairy industrialists have been looking for new markets for several months, and that activity will continue. I hope very much that if one company succeeds to get a foothold in Japan, it will be easier for others to reach the market," said Murakas, adding that E-Piim is ready to sell 5,000 tonnes of cheese and as much whey powder a year to Japan.

Foreign Trade and Entrepreneurship Minister Anne Sulling is in Japan until the end of this week. Minister Anne Sulling meets with Japan's Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Finance Isshu Sugawara, Japanese Economy, Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Daishiro Yamagiwa, Parliament's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazuyuki Nakane and Japan-Estonia Parliamentary Group representatives.

There are also meetings scheduled with several Japanese big corporations. The Minister is accompanied by a business delegation composed of Transiidikeskus, EVR Cargo, Codeborne, Ericsson, Tallinn Airport, E-Piim, Molycorp Silmet and Chemi-Pharm.
