The global role of ocean resources has increased and will continue to do so, and we must learn to use them properly, as Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Karmenu Vella said during the opening of the European Year for Development at the Latvian National Library yesterday, cites LETA.

In discussing the opportunities offered by ocean resources, one must realize that there are increasingly more opportunities, and these resources are becoming increasingly more important and necessary to people, the commissioner said. At the same time, it is important to remember that oceans are only one part of the entire world's water system, therefore, they must be taken into consideration together with the rest of the world's water system.

The European Union has been continuously pursuing various global environmental goals, and will continue to formulate new objectives, which will be one of the main tasks of the European Commission, Vella said.

The commissioner believes that at the same time, it is important to think about the aspects of environmental protection and development, how to draw the international community's attention toward environmental issues, and how to protect natural resources.

Our responsibility to ensure the highest environmental standards and protection is also a moral commitment to future generations. The livelihood and the quality of life of future generations depend entirely on our success in achieving our goals," Vella said.
