The memorandum was signed between the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Turkish Ministry of European Affairs during President Dalia Grybauskaite's working visit to Turkey.

The memorandum will help determine the areas in which Lithuania's assistance to Turkey is needed for the implementation of legal, administrative and institutional Euro-integration reforms.

At the meetings with Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlut Cavusoglu and Minister of European Affairs Volan Bozkir, Linkevicius noted consistent support by Lithuania for Turkey's European Union accession process and appreciated new commitments taken by Turkey striving for EU membership.

The ministers discussed crucial Turkey-EU cooperation areas: issues of foreign and security policies, prospects of the EU-Turkey customs union and the implementation of the EU-Turkey readmission agreement which took effect this year.

The sides discussed complex geopolitical situation in the neighbouring countries. It was noted that Lithuania-Turkey NATO cooperation has recently gained greater significance and that every measure must be taken to implement the decisions adopted at the NATO Summit in Wales in order for the situation in Ukraine to stabilise. The worsening situation of Crimean Tatars was highlighted.

Linkevicius emphasised Turkey's significant role in combating the Islamic State terrorist organisation and dealing with problems of refugees from Syria.

The parties underlined the importance of enhancing economic cooperation. Lithuania thanked Turkey for the support it expressed for Lithuania's strive for membership in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
