A detained Lithuanian citizen was spying for Belarus and was interested in air traffic control in Lithuania, said representatives of the State Security Department (VSD) during a news conference on Monday, informs LETA/ELTA.

The officials also said that one more person was detained for spying for a foreign country, however, a case against him has not been brought to court yet.

VSD head Gediminas Grina informed reporters that the entire counter-intelligence operation lasted for more than three years.

According to Grina, the information gathered by the spy was not necessarily classified, yet, a body of any information collected piece by piece regarding an object or activity of strategic importance is extremely valuable to foreign structures.

An undisclosed Lithuanian citizen who was spying for Belarus and collecting air traffic control information was employed at the state company Oro Navigacija which is the sole provider of the air traffic services, the communications, navigation and surveillance services and the aeronautical information services in the airspace of Lithuania for the needs of civil aviation in peacetime.

It is suspected that the spy would in secret photograph the company's documents and other objects and forward the gathered information to the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus.

"The information is related to the management of civil and military flights and security requirements. We cannot specify how much information was leaked to Belarus because of the investigation," said Rolandas Kiskis, head of the Lithuanian Criminal Police Bureau.

According to Deputy Prosecutor General Darius Raulusaitis, the spy is facing from 3 to 15 years in prison.
