Supreme Court turns down claim contesting results of 12th Saeima elections in Latgale

BC, Riga, 31.10.2014.Print version
The Supreme Court in Latvia decided today to turn down Harmony's claim contesting the results of the 12th Saeima elections in Latgale election district, informs LETA.

The verdict cannot be appealed.

As reported, Harmony wanted the Supreme Court to order the Central Election Commission to deem invalid those ballots that were cast for Unity and in which all candidates' names were crossed out, with only Dzintars Zakis' name left uncrossed, as well as those ballots in which Zakis received "pluses".

Harmony urged the court to order the Central Election Commission to recount the remaining valid ballots and accordingly approve changes in the 12th Saeima election results for Latgale Region.

Harmony representative, MP Andrejs Elksnins said that evidence compellingly pointed to the possibility of electoral fraud.

He said that the Security Police have not revealed the contents of their initiated criminal cases. It currently seems that "there are no suspects, no defendants, no transparency." He was also surprised about why the Security Police did not turn to the Latvian Television journalist who had reported about specific vote-buying cases.

Unity's representative, attorney Lauris Leja said that the claimant is apparently unsatisfied with the Security Police's work. He added that there is a chance that witnesses' testimonies were coordinated prior to the court hearings.
