The General Assembly of the United Nations on Tuesday elected Latvia to serve on the UN Human Rights Council for a period of three years, from 2015 through 2017, as the Foreign Ministry informed LETA.

This is the first time Latvia is elected to the UNHRC, the Foreign Ministry emphasizes. In addition to Latvia, fourteen more countries will begin to work in the UNHRC next year – Albania, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Botswana, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Qatar, Congo, Netherlands, Paraguay, Portugal and El Salvador.

The election to the UNCHR confirms these fifteen countries' achievements in human rights on the national and international levels.

The 47-member UNCHR is an intergovernmental body within the UN system responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe and for addressing situations of human rights violations and make recommendations on them.
