Estonian Parliament adopted e-residency law

BC, Tallinn, 21.10.2014.Print version
On Tuesday, Estonian Riigikogu adopted the legislative amendment that provides regulations for issuing digital ID cards to e-residents, writes LETA/National Broadcasting.

All 80 MPs in the present at the sitting voted in favour of the proposal.

The legislative amendment will supplement the Identity Documents Act in the section that regulates issuing digital identity cards to persons who are not Estonian citizens or foreigners residing in Estonia.

Explanatory memorandum annexed to the draft law states that creating digital ID cards for e-residents will help foreigners residing in foreign countries be included in contributing to Estonian economic, scientific and educational and IT environment.

Initially, e-residency can be used by those foreigners who are linked to Estonia through investments or entrepreneurship, as they might need to use digital signatures in certain situations.
