Linkevicius to CNN: Europe should continue to sanction Russia

BC, Vilnius, 17.10.2014.Print version
Lithuania's Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius joined CNN's Richard Quest to discuss the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The minister said that sanctions to Russia must be maintained and, if necessary, increased, cites LETA/ELTA.

Linkevicius emphasized that this is a means to support the Ukrainian government.

"We would like to see an irreversible process. If they (Ukrainians – ELTA) decided to go this way towards the European Union, it cannot be just their own problem – we cannot be just observers – as in a football match. We have to assist them, this is exactly what we have to do," Linkevicius said.

When asked about the opportunity of threat from Russia to the Baltic States and whether there is a real risk and threat to Lithuania, the Lithuanian minister said: "We are members of NATO. I have no doubts about the security guarantees provided by it. The summit in Newport was very successful. As the minister of foreign affairs and a former defence minister, I am really well informed that measures are taken very seriously. But our people are concerned, they need some certainty concerning the situation around".
