BC, Riga, 12.10.2014.Print version
More than a year after the Riga Castle fire, the prosecutor handling the criminal case has handed it over to court, with three persons being charged, informs LETA.

The Public Prosecutor's Office of the Riga District Court has accused two company employees responsible for fire safety in the building. The third person is accused of starting the fire due to negligence on duty.

The two former accused have been charged with violations of fire safety rules. The applicable penalty is temporary imprisonment, community service or a fine.

The third person is accused of damaging property due to neglect. Such crime is punishable by up to three years in prison, community service or a fine.

Four legal entities have also been charged for carelessness in supervision of the reconstruction works at the castle.

As reported, the accused persons in the June 21, 2013 disaster are the construction supervisor from SBRE and a worker from the subcontractor Fritex, who caused the blaze by carelessness on the job. The third suspect has not been named.

Latvian State Television previously reported that the June 20 late night fire at the Castle broke out due to negligence. While conducting renovations in the attic, a minor fire broke out that the workers put out with an extinguisher. However, none of the workers remained at the scene – obligatory for a period of twelve to 24 hours to make sure that embers do not ignite again. Likewise, the Military Police, in charge of patrolling the building after the workers left, was not informed about this incident.
