Hundreds Estonians protest against cohabitation law

BC, Tallinn, 06.10.2014.Print version
Hundreds of people convened on Sunday by the Estonian parliament building in Toompea, Tallinn, to a protest meeting against the cohabitation law that is currently in the parliament proceedings, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

The protest demonstration that lasted for several hours, included performances of singers as well as speeches and was organised by the foundation In Protection of Family and Tradition. The cohabitation law will be put to second reading in the parliament on Tuesday.

"The adoption of this law would be a part of a much wider effort to pervert our society's moral foundations and this thing would not stop with approving the law. We have gathered here to send politicians a very clear message – the Estonian people will not accept humiliation, ignoring our cultural traditions, whether it is done under the perverse slogan of tolerance, or under the pressure of foreign masters," said the foundation's board chairman Varro Vooglaid. He said, as reported by Delfi that approval of the cohabitation law would actually mean allowing same-sex marriages which would fundamentally change the essence of family and marriage.

The draft cohabitation law passed its first reading in the parliament in June, and the discussion continues on Tuesday. The bill creates the possibility of concluding gender-neutral cohabitation agreements and its aim is to guarantee adequate protection to people who cohabitate together but are not married.
