6,730 Latvian citizens submit votes for safekeeping on first day

6,730 citizens submitted their votes for safekeeping at polling stations throughout the country for the 12th Saeima elections yesterday, Central Election Commission spokeswoman Kristine Berzina informed LETA.

According to the election commission, 0.43% of eligible voters submitted their votes yesterday.

 

In Riga, 3,908 persons used the early voting option yesterday, in Vidzeme – 1,275, in Zemgale – 600, in Kurzeme – 573, and in Latgale – 374 voters.

 

According to information from the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs, there are 1,548,538 eligible voters in Latvia.

 

Yesterday was the first day voters could submit their votes for safekeeping at polling stations.

 

Today and Friday, some voting stations will also offer voters the opportunity to submit their vote beforehand. This is an opportunity for those who will not be in the country or are busy on voting day to submit their vote. The vote will be kept for safe keeping, and will be deposited in the voting box on election day if the voter does not come back to retrieve the vote if he/she changes their mind.

 

The actual 12th Saeima elections will take place from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on October 4.

 

A total of 1,052 voting stations will be open during the 12th Saeima elections in Latvia and around the world. There will be 99 voting stations operating abroad.
