BC, Riga, 01.10.2014.Print version
Yesterday, the government of Latvia approved the Public Health Guidelines for 2014-2020 with the aim to increase the number of healthy life years by three until 2020, reports LETA.

The aim is to reach 57 healthy life years for men and 60 years for women by 2020, as well as to reduce the number of potentially lost life years by 11%.

In order to achieve these goals, several sub-goals have been proposed, such as the elimination of inequality in healthcare, ensuring that all Latvian residents have access to equal opportunities to receive medical treatment. Another sub-goal stipulates reduction of premature mortality caused by non-infectious diseases, at the same time reducing infant death rates.

The Health Ministry also proposes that living and working environments need to be improved, at the same time reducing injuries and mortality caused by external causes.

The ministry plans to improve health of pregnant women and children, as well as to create an efficient, safe, and viable healthcare system.

In order to implement all the said measures, the Health Ministry's budget will require additional – as compared to this year – EUR 105.66 million in 2015, EUR 209.36 million in 2016, EUR 377.22 million in 2017, EUR 542.49 million in 2018, EUR 612.33 million in 2019, and EUR 680.91 million in 2020.
